Sustainability &
Plant Science
Students have been learning about the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals and this initiative opens avenues for students to look for sustainable practices in gardening. (SDG2)
Chisholm’s semi-retired greenhouse recently had an adornment of sunflower hybrid seedlings.
Since the planting date at the end of February, our 17 e-STEAM students (Composite Year 8-9) have tended their potted sunflowers at school, during their classes and experimented with different variables such as watering and fertilising regime, experiment with amount of light exposure, presence of water crystals, slow-release fertiliser and potting mix conditions.

Decorate Your Life
With Sunflowers!

The University of Queensland in Gatton set the growing conditions parameters and our team of plant and soil scientists chose different variables to test and observe.

Some sustainable practices done were:

* re-using old smaller pots or old household containers lined with cardboards for thinned plants
* re-planting thinned and removed sunflower plants to re-grow
* finding creative ways to re-use other resources such as twigs or sticks as stakes
* Working with nature instead of chemicals for pest management such as encouraging ladybirds which would eat any aphids on plants
* sometimes passively harvesting water to water the plants
